Provoking physical health problems such as stress and sleep disorders, which in turn can cause long-term psychological and even mental health issues, noise constitutes a public health concern as it can have effects on the health of the population. Most globally recognized scientific organizations, including the WHO, attribute a number of effects to noise, including annoyance, sleep disturbance, and cardiovascular problems such as hypertension. See Advisory on a Québec Policy to Fight Environmental Noise: Towards Healthy Sound Environments.
Furthermore, emissions of pollutants from diesel engines, such as fine particles and harmful gases, can contribute to poor air quality, leading to various health problems, especially among children and the elderly.
Finally, safety risks associated with larger vehicles traveling on residential streets, including the potential for accidents and reduced visibility for drivers, make heavy truck traffic a major concern for the safety and well-being of residents.
For over 30 years, residents of Chemin de la Butte-aux-Renards have been fighting for the city to redirect the intense truck traffic to an alternative route, but their efforts have been in vain.
Without resolving the issue or continuing the search for a solution, the municipal council of the City of Varennes has decided not to appeal the decision of the CPTAQ to the Administrative Tribunal of Quebec, and have abandoned the residents of Chemin Butte-aux-Renards.
The main objective of this web portal is to denounce the unacceptable events occurring daily on Chemin de la Butte-aux-Renards and the inaction of those responsible. Whether it be the politicians, the Quebec Minister of Transport, the Mayor of Varennes Martin Damphousse, the municipal council (Brigitte Collin, Carine Durocher, Benoit Duval, Guillaume Fortier, Geneviève Labrecque, Gaétan Marcil, Natalie Parent, and Marc-André Savaria), CRH, Demix, BauVal, Roxboro and Bricon.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
The residents of Chemin de la Butte-aux-Renards demand a quality of life, equal to that of the other citizens of Varennes, Quebec.
Given the proximity of residences to chemin de la Butte-aux-Renards, no other mitigation measure besides a bypass road is feasible in this situation.
We demand CONCRETE ACTIONS from these companies (the multinational company CRH / Demix and the BauVal / Roxboro / Bricon Group), city representatives, and our leaders who are the only ones PROFITING from the situation at the expense of the citizens of chemin de la Butte-aux-Renards.
Urgent measures must be taken to ensure the health and safety of its residents.
